About a 20-minute drive north of Byron Bay, off the old Pacific Highway, 'Mullum' is Byron Shire's administrative centre, housing the local council in the impressive new Council building in Station Street. Set out in a grid pattern, Mullumbimby has the usual range of shops and services, including three pubs in the town centre offering good country fare and boutique beer, as well as a good selection of wine.

The parks along the river offer shady picnic areas, or why not play a spot of tennis at the riverside courts? Mullumbimby is a bicycle-friendly town, being relatively flat and easy to get around. On the third Saturday of each month is the community market, held in the town centre.

Mullum's major event is the Chincogan Fiesta, held every September, when the streets are closed to traffic while parades and street stalls turn "the biggest little town in Australia" into a carnival for the duration. The highlight of the fiesta is the footrace (walk or run) to the top of Mt Chincogan, which offers a small cash prize to the winner. Money raised from the event is donated to charity, and it's not necessary to run; plenty of the participants take the walking option.
